TWELVE suspects have been arrested by the police in connection with arson at Akano Umuapu in Ohaji Egbema L.G.A of Imo State. 30 persons were feared dead, 20 houses burnt while people of the area fled their homes in a recent crisis in the area.
The state Commissioner of Police Mr. Aloysius Okorie said yesterday after visiting the village into the to assess the extent of destruction that about 50 houses were burnt by yet to be identified people.
Okorie expressed sadness over the destruction in the village where majority are subsistent farmers.
He warned people no matter the level of provocation not to take laws into their hands, but always allow the law to take its course whenever they feel aggrieved. Mr. Okorie promised that a thorough investigation would be conducted into the matter to determine the actual cause of the crisis and also fish out those behind the act.
